Mathew Horne joins The Battle
The Gavin and Stacey star steps back in time in this story of the infamous Brit Pop rivalry
Mathew Horne returns to the stage in this brand new play by John Niven that recalls the chart battle between Blur and Oasis during the Cool Britannia era of the 90s. Instantly recognisable from his titular role in Gavin and Stacey, Horne is no stranger to the stage, most recently starring alongside Sigourney Weaver in The Tempest at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
Playing Andy Ross, the music executive who signed Blur back in 1990, Horne commented on the new venture, saying: "[The Battle] is right in the sweet spot of my teenage cultural experience. I'm thrilled to be exploring this iconic era in music on stage with such a talented creative team involved."
The Battle will begin performances at Birmingham Rep next February, before taking to the road in March.
What is the story of The Battle?
With their single releases timed to drop on the same day, the battle lines were drawn: Oasis, the voice of the working-class North, versus Blur, the art-school South. The media and tabloids stoked the flames, fans chose sides, and what began as a clash over record sales spiraled into a full-blown cultural moment. Are you ready to pick a side?
