Scottish Opera - The Great Wave

Scottish Opera - The Great Wave at Glasgow Theatre Royal

Why see Scottish Opera - The Great Wave?

The Story of Hokusai

Created by composer Dai Fujikura and librettist Harry Ross, and directed by Satoshi Miyagi, this international collaboration brings the intricate textures of Japanese tradition to the grandeur of opera, with Scottish Opera joining forces with KAJIMOTO to present a spectacular staging. Starring Daisuke Ohyama as Hokusai and soprano Julieth Lozano Rolong as i, Stuart Stratford conducts The Orchestra of Scottish Opera, augmented by the ethereal sound of the shakuhachi and the Chorus of the Great Wave embodying the communal spirit of Edo-era printmakers.

What Is It About?

The Great Wave tells the story of the artist's creative battles and his profound partnership with his daughter i, which helped shaped the future of Japanese art and popular culture globally. It's a beautiful work which captures forces that gave rise to one of the most recognisable images in the world: The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

Thankyou Japan, Kazimoto, and Scottish Opera! And the Art Exhibition is a must go-to too! ... Read more
